WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL? A lipid naturally produced by the body, cholesterol is a necessary component of most body tissues including the blood, liver, nervous system and brain. Cholesterol is vital for the production of sex and adrenal hormones, vitamin D and bile, necessary for the digestion of fats.

While there is little chance of a cholesterol deficiency in the body, there is a growing concern for high levels of cholesterol in the body, specifically the levels of LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol.

 

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH CHOLESTEROL? Of primary concern is the risk of a buildup in the arteries of fatty deposits composed of cholesterol and calcium. Left untreated, this condition may lead to arteriosclerosis and its more advanced form, atherosclerosis, causing the walls of arteries to thicken and harden. Most affected are the aorta and other arteries of the heart and brain. This may greatly increase the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease and heart attacks.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE BENEFITS FROM TAKING “Choless Control”? “Choless-Control” is an effective formula for a safe and natural means to help lower cholesterol in the body. Its active ingredient is Policosanol. Your body produces almost 85 percent of its blood cholesterol in your liver, and experts believe that policosanol impedes the work of enzymes critical to this production process. Policosanol also assists in flushing dietary cholesterol from your body by blocking cholesterol receptors, found mostly in your liver.

In a double-blind study published in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacological Research in 2001, scientists gave 29 participants 20 mg of policosanol daily and gave 30 other participants 40 mg daily. Researchers also gave 30 participants a placebo daily. After 24 weeks, both policosanol groups experienced a 27 percent drop in LDL cholesterol and a rise in HDL cholesterol of 17 percent. The placebo group experienced no beneficial changes in either LDL or HDL cholesterol levels.

A double-blind study published in Gynecological Endocrinology in 2000 also reported benefits, and at lower dosages. After following a low-fat diet for six weeks without lowering their cholesterol, 244 women were given either a placebo for 24 weeks or 5 mg of policosanol daily for the first 12 weeks followed by 10 mg daily for the next 12 weeks. The 10 mg dose lowered LDL by 25 percent and increased HDL by 29 percent. Participants who took the 5 mg dose lowered their LDL by 18 percent and increased their HDL by 17 percent.

• Policosanol is free from side effects.
• Policosanol works by blocking the synthesis of cholesterol. It does not inhibit the HMG-CoA enzyme like the “statin” cholesterol-lowering drugs, but it may inhibit a different enzyme. Its exact mechanism is not known.
• As for interfering with other heart medication, policosanol doesn’t appear to cause any problems. Adverse reactions do not occur with blood thinners or beta-blockers, except that policosanol may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect of propranolol.(13) No direct studies have been done combining policosanol with other drugs. However, during clinical trials policosanol was given to people taking calcium antagonists, diuretics, vasodilators, NSAIDs, meprobamate, thyroid hormones, digoxin, anticoagulants, ulcer drugs, neuroleptics, antidepressants and anxiolytics (anti-anxiety drugs) without any problems.
• Policosanol is a natural supplement made from sugar cane. The main ingredient is octacosanol. Octacosanol is an alcohol found in the waxy film that plants have over their leaves and fruit.
